Who This Checklist Is For
If you're a contractor or installer who just finished a Daikin system and need to verify it's up to spec before the customer signs off—this one's for you. I review about 200+ Daikin installations every year as a quality and brand compliance manager. Over the last 4 years, I've rejected close to 12% of first deliveries because of small but costly oversights. This checklist covers the five things I personally look at every time.
Step 1: Match the Model Number to the Order (Every Single Time)
First thing: pull the serial and model off the outdoor unit and compare it against the purchase order. You'd be surprised how often a 24,000 BTU unit gets swapped for a 18,000 BTU one because someone typed the wrong SKU. (Should mention: we once shipped a whole batch of mini splits that were 2 sizes too small—cost us $22,000 in rework and delayed the project by 3 weeks.)
The check is simple: Daikin's model number tells you capacity, voltage, and refrigerant type. For example, a FTX09AXVJU is a 9,000 BTU indoor unit. If the customer ordered a 12,000, that's a red flag right away. Write it down, go look at the unit, and don't trust the shipping label alone.
Step 2: Verify Refrigerant—It's R32, Not R410A
Daikin moved to R32 for most new residential equipment a few years ago (around 2023 for US market). I still see installers accidentally using R410A because they're used to the old standard. Using the wrong refrigerant voids the warranty and kills efficiency. Check the nameplate on the outdoor condenser—it clearly says "R32." If it doesn't, stop and call the supplier.
One more thing: R32 requires a different set of gauges and recovery machine. I learned this the hard way in 2022 when a contractor used R410A gauges on an R32 unit—the fittings are different and they cross-contaminated the system. We had to replace the entire charge and the compressor. (Note to self: always ask what gauges they're using before the job starts.)
Step 3: Check Inverter Settings and Wiring
Daikin's inverter technology is the main reason people buy the brand—variable speed compressor that adjusts to load. But it only works if the wiring and dip switches are set correctly. On a heat pump system, the outdoor unit communicates with the indoor head(s) via a 2-wire connection. If the installer used 4-wire thermostat wire, the signal can get interference and cause a loss of communication error.
Also: Daikin's default inverter mode is "auto-adapt" which learns the system over 50 hours of operation. If someone manually overrode it to "high performance" to get full capacity right away, the unit will short-cycle later. (I really should start putting a sticker on the control board reminding installers not to touch the dip switches unless they're Daikin trained.)
Step 4: Test Drainage on Air Source Heat Pumps
Daikin air source heat pumps have an indoor coil with a condensate drain pan. This is the single most common cause of callbacks I see: improper drain line slope. The line needs at least 1/4-inch drop per foot. If it's too flat, water sits in the pan and grows mold, or worse, leaks onto the ceiling. I still kick myself for not checking a job back in 2021 where the contractor thought "close enough" was okay—customer found water damage after 3 months and sued.
Pour a cup of water into the drain pan during testing. Watch it flow out freely. If it backs up, find the slope issue. And don't forget the trap—Daikin recommends a P-trap on the drain line to prevent odors from coming back into the room.
Step 5: Run a Full Performance Test (Not Just "It Blows Cold")
Most installers turn the system on, feel the air, and call it done. That's not enough. For Daikin mini splits and central systems, I run a 20-minute test cycle that measures:
- Supply air temperature vs. return air temperature (delta T should be 14–20°F in cooling, 20–30°F in heating)
- Suction and discharge pressures (with R32, typical suction ~120 psi, discharge ~350 psi at design conditions)
- Current draw on the compressor (should match spec sheet within 10%)
If any of those numbers are off, something's wrong—maybe a restriction in the line set, a undercharged refrigerant, or a failing component. (Surprise, surprise: most field issues turn out to be a kinked copper line from a sloppy installation.)
Common Mistakes & What to Avoid
Don't assume the customer knows who makes Daikin air conditioners. I get this question a lot: "Who makes Daikin air conditioners?" The answer is Daikin itself—they're the world's largest HVAC manufacturer, with their own compressor plants in Japan, Thailand, and China. But some clients confuse them with rebranded units. If the customer asks, explain that Daikin is the OEM behind many other brands' premium lines. This builds trust.
If you're also fielding questions about other equipment (like "how does portable evaporative cooler work?" or "I need a GE 27 inch single wall oven" or "range hood blower" installation)—that's outside my expertise. I'm a Daikin quality guy, not an appliance generalist. The vendor who says "this isn't my strength—here's who does it better" earns more trust than the one who tries to wing it. Point them to a specialist, and stick to what you know.
One last thing: this checklist was accurate as of Q1 2025. Daikin updates installation procedures every couple of years (especially for R32 and new communication protocols). Always download the latest installation manual from the Daikin dealer portal before you start. I still see installers using PDFs from 2019 and wondering why the wiring diagram doesn't match the unit.
